Chennai Lights Out Campaign builds awareness
Chennai Lights Out is a campaign initiated at ExNoRa International. It is an awareness campaign focusing on environmental protection and simple solutions to counter the threat of Global Warming. On the 8th of August 2008 at 8 pm for 8 minutes, we urge people to switch off their lights and other unnecessary electrical appliances. This action would symbolize the fact that we acknowledge the problem and will adopt eco-friendly practices in our home/workplace/school or car.
Although the problem of Climate Change is global, its causes are rooted in the way we live and treat our surroundings. Immediate measures need to be taken to arrest Global Warming in our home, street and workplace and for students in their school / college. With this in mind, Exnora International has initiated 88888 Lights Out campaign to create awareness about the causes, consequences and solutions of Global Warming.

Mango Magic
Mango Magic is a social initiative started by "Seed Exnora." this summer. Everyone enjoys mangoes and nature has provided us with the best varieties (Alphonso, Banganapalli, Rumani, Himampasand, Malgova, Salem.)
The main objective of "Seed Exnora" is to assist nature in her recycling process. Exnora believes that each seed can be turned into a source of revenue for a village. The seed can be planted to grow and become a tree. A thousand mangoes can come from that one seed.
Mango trees are also vital to sustain many bird species like barbets, lesser golden-backed woodpecker, Indian pitta, tailorbird, great tit, golden oriole…the list is endless.
Mango growing can help local communities to improve green cover and help nature help us in return.
Role of "Seed Exnora"
'Seed Exnora' will pick up the seeds and germinate it into a sapling that can be planted anywhere. You can also come forward and donate your mango seeds to "Seed Exnora" or you can also buy saplings from us.
Do it yourself
1. You can yourself help the seed to grow into a seedling, then a sapling and finally a tree. It is very simple. The seed itself does the work and you only do facilitation.
2. You start a small movement in your street and ask every family to take care of one seed. You plant a seed of action in their minds.
3. Go to the school known to you or the one near your place and with the permission of the School, tell the children about this campaign of 'Seed Exnora'. Ask them to participate.
This initiative can change someone's life.

Teach Reach
His Excellency Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamilnadu, launching 'Teach Reach' programme organised by Exnora International, by presenting the first copy to S Srinivasan, coordinator, Teach Reach Programme, in Chennai yesterday.
'Teach Reach' an educational programme catering to the slum children was launched by Exnora International in Chennai on November 23rd. This project aims at establishing free tuition centres for the underprivileged in at least a hundred centres in Chennai.
The classes are conducted in school class rooms as well as places owned by its members. The children will also have classes for brain resource development, environmental protection and spoken English.
Inaugurating the programme, Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamilnadu, explained that these tuition centres will certainly make a silent revolution towards the education of the poor and the needy. 'Such tuition centres will help the poor children to score high marks, develop their self confidence, motivate and train them towards the upkeep of the environment' he added. Referring to the lower sector of the society, he said it was necessary for our country to take care of the underprivileged. He stressed that only countries that take care of the weak and the needy see progress. He further said that the students who were in the slums find it difficult to cope with their subjects. 'Their parents, who are also uneducated cannot bear the cost of giving the child special tuition', he said
Exnora believes that teachers should not regard education like a mechanical process. It must be considered as a living process, vibrant with life. It should integrate the person with his environment and give him a total perspective and a global outlook.

Water Bodies Protection
Exnora International has urged the State government to take immediate steps to remove encroachments, desilt and maintain the water bodies of Tamil Nadu.
Encroachments on river banks as well as of water bodies resulted in the inundation of residential colonies during monsoon. There is acute water shortage in Chennai city despite the presence of so many lakes. It is not want of water. It is want of water management. Exnora has called for more protection and preservation of water bodies and waterways.
Water Bodies Protection Exnora Reports from Chennai has noted that the Velachery lake was shrinking alarmingly and said it once spanned an area of 260 acres and presently it was only 60 acres. The Pallikaranai marsh has been totally ruined thanks to Chennai Corporation and Alandur Municipality who dump 1,800 tones of garbage everyday and set fire to it. Similarly, the Porur lake which provides water to West Chennai is polluted by sewage.
This has happened because water bodies are owned and maintained by different authorities like PWD, Revenue Department, HR and CE Department, Metrowater/ TWAD Board, local bodies, Fisheries Department, Indian Railways, Defence and also by private parties.
To put an end to this Water Bodies Protection Exnora has also suggested that the government should create a Water Body Protection Force to protect, manage and improve water bodies.
There are 3,000 lakes and ponds in the Chennai metropolitan area. If it they are desilted, deepened and maintained, it would be enough to meet Chennai's water needs.
